Oval Ruby Drop Earrings | 9ct Yellow Gold

Two oval rubies claw-set in 9ct yellow gold, hung from simple hook wires so they swing and catch the light. Natural ruby, the July birthstone, in a warm pinkish red that carries a lot of colour for the size.

The setting is stripped right back. Four slim claws hold each stone at the corners and nothing else gets in the way, so the ruby is almost all you see from the front. A small gold bead sits above each drop where it meets the wire, a neat little finish. Because they hang free, the colour keeps moving whenever you do.

About ruby
Ruby is the red variety of corundum, the same mineral as sapphire, coloured by a trace of chromium in the crystal. That same chromium is what makes a fine ruby seem to almost glow. It sits at 9 on the hardness scale, second only to diamond, which is part of why it has been worn and treasured for thousands of years and stands up so well to everyday wear. The most prized stones show a pure, saturated red, and good natural ruby in a clean colour like this is genuinely hard to come by.
