Oval Peridot Drop Earrings | 9ct Yellow Gold

Two oval peridots claw-set in 9ct yellow gold, hung from simple hook wires so they swing and catch the light. Natural peridot, the August birthstone, in that fresh lime-green that carries a lot of colour for the size.

The setting is stripped right back. Four slim claws hold each stone and nothing else gets in the way, so the peridot is almost all you see from the front. They hang straight off the hook wires with a small link, which keeps them light and lets the colour move whenever you do. Simple, everyday earrings that still bring a bit of green.

About peridot
Peridot is the gem form of a mineral called olivine, and it's one of the very few stones that comes in only one colour. Most gems get their colour from a stray trace of something else in the crystal, but peridot's green is built into the stone itself, set by the iron in its make-up, which is why it holds that steady olive-to-lime green rather than drifting from one stone to the next. It forms deep in the earth's mantle and is carried up by volcanoes, and a little has even turned up inside meteorites.
