About pearls
Pearls are the one gem that comes from a living thing rather than the ground. A freshwater pearl grows inside a mussel, which slowly wraps a tiny irritant in layer after layer of nacre, the same material that lines the shell, and it's those layers that give a pearl its soft glow. A button pearl, like this one, is rounded on top with a flatter back, which lets it sit neatly and face forward. Because they're organic they're softer than most stones, so keep them away from perfume, hairspray and household chemicals, put the necklace on after those rather than before, and wipe it with a soft cloth rather than soaking it. Looked after kindly, pearls last a lifetime and well beyond.
