About pearls
Pearls are the one gem that comes from a living thing rather than the ground. A freshwater pearl grows inside a mussel, which slowly wraps a tiny irritant in layer after layer of nacre, the same material that lines the shell, and it's those layers that give a pearl its soft glow. Knotting the strand between each pearl, as this one is, protects them from rubbing and means that if the thread ever gives way you lose one pearl rather than the lot. Because they're organic they're softer than most stones, so keep them away from perfume, hairspray and household chemicals, put the bracelet on after those rather than before, and wipe it with a soft cloth rather than soaking it. Looked after kindly, pearls last a lifetime and well beyond.
Hardness: around 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than most gems
Birthstone: June
