Doublet Opal and Diamond Hook Earrings | Pear Drops | 9ct Yellow Gold
A pair of doublet opal and diamond hook earrings in 9ct yellow gold. Each opal is bezel set in a smooth rim of yellow gold, with a small round diamond in its own bezel just above. The opals are mostly blue, with flashes of green and teal moving through them. Because every opal is different, the two earrings are well matched but not identical, which is part of the appeal of a natural stone.
Opals: Two pear-shaped doublet opals
Diamonds: Two round brilliant diamonds
Metal: 9ct yellow gold
Setting: Bezel set
Fittings: Closed hooks
Pair with: Matching Pendant
About opal
Opal is made of tiny silica spheres stacked in a regular pattern, and its play of colour comes from light diffracting between them. The size of the spheres decides which colours appear. A doublet is a thin slice of natural precious opal bonded to a dark backing. The backing makes the slice stronger and deepens its colour, so a doublet gives you real opal colour at a more accessible price than a solid stone.
Hardness: 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than most gemstones. Earrings take fewer knocks than rings, but don't soak doublets or wear them swimming or in the shower. Water can work into the bonded layer over time and cloud it. Put them on after hairspray and perfume, and wipe them with a soft damp cloth.
Birthstone: October
