Concept Design: Two-Stone Open Bypass

A round brilliant and a pear cut diamond set apart on a flowing sculpted bypass band in 18ct yellow gold.

What is a two-stone open bypass design?

A two-stone open bypass design is exactly what it sounds like: two diamonds set on a single ring, separated by a sweep of metal that flows between them rather than holding them together. The band itself becomes the connecting element, curving from one stone to the other rather than running underneath them in a straight line.

It sits in the same broader family as a Toi et Moi (the French two-stone style where the diamonds touch side by side), but the visual effect is completely different. Where a Toi et Moi is about two stones meeting as one composition, an open bypass is about two stones in conversation with each other across a sculpted band. Each diamond gets its own space, and the metalwork carries the story between them.

This concept

This version pairs a round brilliant with a pear cut, set apart on a flowing bypass band in 18ct yellow gold. The pear with its point flowing into the curve of the band, while the round sits centred and raised on a four-claw head. The two stones are deliberately spaced rather than touching, which lets each one read as its own element while still working together as a pair.

Everything can be changed

This is a starting point, not the only option. You can change:

  • Stone shapes (any combination — two rounds, oval and round, marquise and pear, round and emerald)
  • Stone orientation (pear set east-west as pictured, or vertically)
  • Stone type (diamond, sapphire, ruby, emerald, your partner's birthstone, an heirloom stone reset)
  • Lab grown or natural diamond
  • Carat weight of each stone
  • Metal (yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, two-tone, platinum)
  • Band style (sculpted bypass as pictured, twisted, or diamond-set)
  • Stone spacing (wider apart, closer together, or with a small accent diamond between)

A note on wedding bands

A sculpted bypass design like this won't sit flush against a standard straight wedding band, so a custom-shaped wedding band is usually part of the picture. This is normal for any non-traditional engagement ring shape, and it's something we'll walk you through during your consultation. We design the engagement ring and wedding band together so they fit perfectly as a set, and the wedding band can be made at the same time or further down the track when you're ready.

Pricing

Custom pricing depends on stone size, type, and metal. Designs with custom sculpted bands like this typically carry a higher making fee than standard settings due to the additional hand-finishing required.
