Malaia garnet shifts colour as the light changes, and this one runs through soft pinks and mauves into deeper plum, warmer in some lights and cooler in others. The split double band leaves air above and below the stone so it sits up on its own, held on the angle by four fine claws. About malaia garnet
Malaia garnet is one of the more unusual members of the garnet family. It's a natural blend of two garnet types, pyrope and spessartine. It comes from the Umba Valley in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, and it got its name almost as an insult: when miners first turned it up in the 1960s they couldn't match it to any known garnet, so they called it malaia, Swahili for outcast, or out of the family. Some stones, like this one, also shift colour between daylight and warmer indoor light, which makes each one distinct.
