Why this ring works

The blue zircon is genuinely special, and worth understanding before anything else. Zircon is a natural gemstone.  Zircon is an ancient mineral (the oldest known sample of any material on Earth is a zircon crystal, dated at 4.4 billion years old), and it has one of the highest refractive indexes of any natural gem, meaning it bends and disperses light more intensely than almost anything except diamond.

The colour ranges from soft sea-glass blue through to vivid Caribbean teal — and at 2.89ct in a cushion cut, this stone sits firmly in the saturated, eye-catching range. Cushion cuts (square with softly rounded corners) suit zircon particularly well because they let the stone's natural fire show without dispersing it the way a brilliant cut might.

Instead of two parallel shoulders meeting symmetrically at the head of the ring, the bypass design has each shoulder curving around the centre stone from opposite directions.

The half-bezel on the zircon is doing two jobs. It protects the corners of the cushion-cut stone (zircon sits at around 7 on the Mohs scale, durable enough for everyday wear but worth protecting at the edges where chips can occur), and it visually frames the stone with two clean blocks of yellow gold that warm the blue rather than competing with it.

The diamond-set shoulders carry the bypass curve down the finger with small bright accents. 12 round brilliants in F-G colour, SI clarity, near colourless, eye-clean, well-matched. The white gold rails around the diamonds keep them reading icy and bright, where pure yellow gold would have given them a warmer cast.
