About pearls
Pearls are the one gem that comes from a living thing rather than the ground. A freshwater pearl grows inside a mussel, which slowly wraps a tiny irritant in layer after layer of nacre, the same material that lines the shell, and it's those layers that give a pearl its soft glow. Because they're organic they're also much softer than most stones, so they ask for a little more care: keep them away from perfume, hairspray and household chemicals, put the ring on after those rather than before, and wipe it with a soft cloth rather than soaking it. Looked after kindly, pearls last a lifetime and well beyond.
