About pearls
Pearls are the one gem that comes from a living thing rather than the ground. A freshwater pearl grows inside a mussel, which slowly wraps a tiny irritant in layer after layer of nacre, the same material that lines the shell, and it's those layers that give a pearl its soft glow. A button pearl, like these, is rounded on top with a flatter back, which lets it sit neatly and face forward. Because they're organic they're softer than most stones, so keep them away from perfume, hairspray and household chemicals, put the earrings on after those rather than before, and wipe them with a soft cloth rather than soaking. Looked after kindly, pearls last a lifetime and well beyond.
Hardness: around 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, softer than most gems
Birthstone: June
Come and see them in the cabinet at Craigieburn. Pearl lustre is one of those things a photo never quite captures. And if you'd like your own version, a different pearl or setting, that's exactly what we do: start with a Bespoke Jewellery Design Consultation.
