An emerald-cut tanzanite of nearly three carats, deep violet-blue, set in a full halo of diamonds on 18ct white gold. A bespoke piece, exclusive to Paton's Place.

Tanzanite runs to a deep blue with a violet lean, and turn it in the light and it shifts again. It's called pleochroism, and it means the stone is never quite the same from one angle to the next.

The centre is an emerald cut, which is all long, clean steps. That's exactly what a stone like this wants. It opens the colour up and lets you look straight into it instead of scattering the eye across facets.

Around it sits a full cluster of diamonds, marquise and pear stones fanning out like petals with smaller rounds filling the gaps, and a line of diamonds running down each shoulder. The tanzanite is held in double claws, so nothing crowds the colour. It reads as one bright, moving whole rather than a stone with a border.

About tanzanite
Tanzanite is the blue-violet form of a mineral called zoisite, and it comes from just one place on earth: a few square kilometres of the Merelani Hills in northern Tanzania, under Mount Kilimanjaro. It was only found in 1967, which makes it a genuinely modern gem. Because it's dug from a single deposit that won't ever be replaced.
