It's a natural blend of two garnet types, pyrope and spessartine. It comes from the Umba Valley in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, and it got its name almost as an insult: when miners first turned it up in the 1960s they couldn't match it to any known garnet, so they called it malaia, Swahili for outcast, or out of the family.
